Wisdom of Mastery

Change is inevitable.  How we respond to change is where our power lies.

You cannot control all aspects of life as it unfolds around you, but you can control what happens inside you even as change happens around you.

To control what you can control and to release what you cannot control – this is Mastery.

Meditation - The Whole Package

Meditation is like a package deal - you have to want to try it, you have to find the right time for it, you have to learn a technique that suits your style and, above all, you have to find the right teacher to learn from. After that, you have to put generous dollops of discipline, devotion and dedication into your meditation practice.

In return for the meditation you do, you become more focused, improve your health, get better sleep, have more energy and also reduce your frustrations.  Meditation is a simple technique that almost everyone can enjoy.

Here are a few tips to be mindful of whilst you are meditating:
  1. Sit straight (but comfortable) – for a good meditation posture, you need to be still, steady, relaxed and comfortable.
  2. Centre your head, neck and trunk – in a good meditative posture, your head and neck should be centered, so that your neck is not twisted or turned to either side, or your head held too far forward.
  3. Relax your shoulders, arms and hands – your shoulders and arms should be relaxed and allowed to rest gently on your knees. A relaxed yet alert body is the ideal platform for meditation to happen.
  4. Be comfortable – There are many positions that allow you to sit comfortably, keeping your spine aligned, without twisting your legs or creating any discomfort.
  5. Do not slump – Relaxed does not mean slumped. Pay attention to how you sit and adjust it whenever you find yourself slumping
  6. Be kind to your body – use a cushion, pillow or folded blanket to place under your hips – this will allow your knees to be more relaxed and allow you to sit for longer duration.
  7. Enjoy the practice of meditation – Make sure you come into this time with the right attitude. There is no point stressing about meditation that is supposed to relax you! Bring the right mindset to meditation and you will be amazed at the immense relaxation it brings to both your body and your mind.

Know yourself

The fastest path to understanding your mind and knowing yourself is through the practice of meditation. Meditation is ancient, but contrary to popular belief, it is totally non-religious, very scientific and an empowering technique that is unmatched.

Meditation never asks what our faith or belief is. As long as we are human beings we can attain self-understanding through meditation. The fact that it has not just existed but thrived for thousands of years and been used by not only spiritual masters but everyday people all over the world speaks volumes for its credibility.

Meditation is not some strange or foreign technique that requires you to change beliefs, culture or religion. Meditation is not a religious ritual or practice at all. What it is, is a very practical, scientific and systematic technique for knowing yourself at all levels.

Meditation does not “belong to” any culture or religion of the world. Meditation is not the preserve of any group or sect of people either. It is mankind’s common inheritance across all regions and civilizations.

Meditation makes no demands on you except that you see yourself as you really are. Meditation gives you the wisdom and tools that allow you to understand your mind, train your mind and then master it – and all this leads to a life of happiness and harmony, both in the inner and outer worlds.

Paying attention to yourself

Meditation implies a sense of “attending to” or “paying attention to” something. Whilst meditating, you pay attention to those dimensions of yourself that are usually not visible or observed – your own inner levels, lying deep within you. These deeper levels are more profound than the process of external life taking place around you, or the abilities of thinking, analyzing, daydreaming, experiencing emotions and taking actions. These are the levels of inner awareness that help you to relate to your own self and bring you in harmony with your own being.

Meditation involves inner attention that is quiet, concentrated and, at the same time, relaxed. There is nothing strenuous or difficult about creating this inner attention. In fact meditation is a process that is restful and relaxing for the mind.

In the beginning, the greatest difficulty is that the mind has not been trained to create this inner attention. With training and practice this focusing becomes a constant ability, always available to you.

It is very easy to begin the practice of meditation, as it all starts in the mind. You simply have to decide that you are going to take up meditation. Once you make that decision, you will find that you do not have to do anything different or demanding physically than what you have already been used to. Your lifestyle will not change but your life will!
