Meditation - The Whole Package

Meditation is like a package deal - you have to want to try it, you have to find the right time for it, you have to learn a technique that suits your style and, above all, you have to find the right teacher to learn from. After that, you have to put generous dollops of discipline, devotion and dedication into your meditation practice.

In return for the meditation you do, you become more focused, improve your health, get better sleep, have more energy and also reduce your frustrations.  Meditation is a simple technique that almost everyone can enjoy.

Here are a few tips to be mindful of whilst you are meditating:
  1. Sit straight (but comfortable) – for a good meditation posture, you need to be still, steady, relaxed and comfortable.
  2. Centre your head, neck and trunk – in a good meditative posture, your head and neck should be centered, so that your neck is not twisted or turned to either side, or your head held too far forward.
  3. Relax your shoulders, arms and hands – your shoulders and arms should be relaxed and allowed to rest gently on your knees. A relaxed yet alert body is the ideal platform for meditation to happen.
  4. Be comfortable – There are many positions that allow you to sit comfortably, keeping your spine aligned, without twisting your legs or creating any discomfort.
  5. Do not slump – Relaxed does not mean slumped. Pay attention to how you sit and adjust it whenever you find yourself slumping
  6. Be kind to your body – use a cushion, pillow or folded blanket to place under your hips – this will allow your knees to be more relaxed and allow you to sit for longer duration.
  7. Enjoy the practice of meditation – Make sure you come into this time with the right attitude. There is no point stressing about meditation that is supposed to relax you! Bring the right mindset to meditation and you will be amazed at the immense relaxation it brings to both your body and your mind.
