Life is Unpredictable !

This morning, I’m giving a talk at SoulCentre Academy on “How to stay Calm in the Storm”.
A subject appropriate to the moment I think.

In life, we are always setting goals for ourselves and working to make them happen. This gives us focus and ensures that we use our time and energy efficiently and effectively. It also provides us with a sense of purpose and direction. We know where we are going and what we want to do. But quite often, due to forces outside our control, things do not go as we had planned and we have to reconsider our plans and priorities, sometimes in the blink of an eye. This is what happens when life is unpredictable.

The ability to accept what is happening and let go of your original expectations is a key for dealing with these unexpected turns of fate. We have a tendency to get stuck in our heads, clinging to an idea of how we think life should go, and we can have a hard time accepting anything that doesn’t comply with that idea.

The fact is that life is unpredictable.

In order to keep us awake to opportunity and to teach us equanimity, the universe throws us the occasional curve ball. Remember that curve balls are not only life’s way of keeping us awake, which is a gift in and of itself; they are also often life’s way of bringing us wonderful surprises.

Next time something doesn’t go the way you planned, take a deep breath, say thank you, and open your mind to a new opportunity.

With love and light, I wish you Enlightenment,

Waking Up

Life is a journey of constant evolution comprised of many small steps.

And each day, we are provided with many opportunities that can allow us to transform into our next highest selves. Awareness means that we are able to realize what we are doing moment to moment. We observe ourselves, noticing our thoughts, choices, actions, and reactions as if we were a detached witness. Awareness is the first step to change because we can’t make a change unless we are aware that one needs to be made in the first place.

Only then can we begin understanding why we are doing what we are doing. Then, it becomes difficult not to change because we are no longer asleep to the truth behind our behaviours. We also begin to realize that, just as much as we are the root source behind our thoughts - the roots for our behaviours, we are also the originator for any changes that we want to happen. There is a freedom that comes with this kind of awareness. Rather than thinking that we are stuck in a repetitive cycle where there is no escape, we begin to see that we always play a hand in creating our own lives.

Whether we are aware of them or not, our thoughts, choices and actions are always ours to make. Our past and our present no longer have to dictate our future when we choose to be aware. We are then free to move beyond our old limits, make new choices, and take new actions.

With awareness, our life can’t help but evolve us. In fact, it is only through awareness that we can continue to consciously evolve in every day of our life, whatever it may bring.

With love and light, I wish you Enlightenment,

Taking Responsibilty is a Spiritual Act

There are many who believe that our lives are predestined and that we should resign ourselves to our lots in life. Yet the truth is that it is up to each one of us to decide what our destiny will be.
While we are all born with a life purpose, it is up to us whether or not we will say yes to fulfilling it. And just like when we choose what to eat, who to keep company with, and whether to turn right or left at a crossroad, choosing to say yes to your destiny is a decision that can only be realized when you take action to make that choice a reality.
Whether you believe it is your destiny to be a parent, an adventurer, an artist, or a spiritual guru, saying yes to your destiny is only the first step. While manifesting your destiny starts with knowing what you want and believing you can attain your goals, there are actions that must be taken and decisions to be made before your destiny can truly happen.
When you take responsibility for fulfilling your destiny and begin acting with the intention of doing so, you not only take fate into your own hands, but also you become the hands of your own fate. Doors open for you to step through, and every choice you make becomes a creative act toward realizing your goals and dreams.
Your destiny may be waiting for you, but whether or not you meet your destiny is up to you.
Your fate is in your hands. Taking responsibility is a spiritual action.

Festival Of Lights

I am in India writing to you on this day of Deepawali.

Deepawali is celebrated across the world as the ancient Hindu festival of lights. It has many traditional mythologies associated with it but I would like you to understand its present day spiritual significance..

The oil lamps symbolise the inner light present inside each one of us and lighting the oil lamp is significant of giving attention to your own soul and making it the centre of your life.

This is important because one of the greatest truths you can understand about life is that we all live simultaneously in 2 worlds - the inner and the outer.
The outer world is the world of your circumstances, events, results, environment, and other people, while the inner world is the world of your thoughts, perception, emotions and actions that arise from your emotions.

My Master, Swami Rama, taught me that true yoga means to be able to live masterfully in the external world while being anchored in the inner world. In other words, to bridge the two.

If you can do that you will realise that regardless of the external world which is full of the uncertain, unknown and insecure, you will be able to create your own reality by the correct use of your mind (thoughts and perception), your heart (emotions) and your body (actions)

So mark my words - It is only in the external world that you will be tested, and it is only in the inner world that you will find your victory!

Peace, Happiness, Love, Success, Completion and Contentment...all of these are off-springs of the inner world, not the external world. To become a Master means to be able to master your inner world of thoughts, perception, emotions and action, regardless of what the externals may be like..

So when the lamp is being lit, it is in fact a silent declaration that 'I will give time to myself and my spiritual growth to be able to light the lamp of my soul within myself so that It may erase the darkness of the external world around me".

We make a commitment to ourselves to live like a lotus flower - which grows in the midst of the muddy, dirty and the negative, and yet rises above it to be positive and beautiful. And shines its beauty on the whole world.
We must learn to live as the Lotus flower - This is the true message of the ancient Masters!

Today, I encourage all of you to light a candle or an oil lamp for yourself and as you do, commit to yourself to live a life centred in your soul, whatever it takes.

We made that commitment many years ago, and that's why we call ourselves SoulCentre.

I send you my love and light, today and always, from this ancient land.

Stay Calm in the Storm

When our next best course of action seems unclear, any dilemmas we face can appear insurmountable. Yet there is nothing we cannot overcome with a clear mind, time, persistence, help, and faith.

Whatever the situation or problem, there is always a solution to it, even if you can’t see it. The first step in overcoming any obstacle is to believe that it can be overcome. Doing so will give you the strength and courage to move through any crisis.

The second step is to make a resolution that you can prevail over any chaos. Enlist a support network of family and friends if necessary. The more minds there are to consider a problem, the more solutions can be found. Don’t discount ideas just because they seem impractical or unrealistic, and don’t keep searching for the ‘perfect’ alternative.

Often there is no perfect choice; there is only a choice to make so we can begin moving beyond whatever is obstructing our path. At the very least, making a choice, even if isn’t the ideal one, can give you a sense of peace before you have to figure out what your next course of action will be.

If you feel overwhelmed, think of other people who have turned adversity into triumph. You will gain a fresh perspective when you remember others who have overcome larger obstacles.

It is during our darkest hours that we sometimes need to remind ourselves that we don’t have to feel helpless. You have within and around you the resources to find a solution to any problem. And the best resource is always a calm and clear mind, one that you can achieve through meditation.

Meditation has been practiced for thousands of years and will give you powerful tools to stay calm in any storm. So try meditation with a certainty that if the choice you make doesn’t work, you are always free to try another.

Believe that you can get through anything, and you will always prevail.

Mistakes are lessons

Learning from past mistakes is necessary for your evolution. This is important to understand because all of us make mistakes and so many of us are still under the burden of guilt for making them.

As long as we continue to feel negative or guilty about our mistakes, we continue to remain stagnant. Instead, learn from them and grow from them. Recognise what you did wrong, understand its lessons and make the lessons a part of your life. Then you will truly become bigger than what you were when you made the mistakes.

Even the brightest, most intelligent, highly successful people make mistakes. They make choices and take action that they later regret. The only difference between them and you is that they learn the lessons and use them to move forward to their own successes.

Courage makes a Master

The Himalayan masters that I learnt from knew that courage is not the absence of fear but the willingness to walk through your fear in pursuit of a goal that is important to you.

You live like the dead when you live in a safe and comfortable prison and cling to the known. You only start to really live your life when your heart beats with excitement and passion. And this happens when you have found something truly meaningful to you or when you have stretched your boundaries.

Growth only happens with courage.

And remember, that on the other side of your fears is where you will discover your true self.
That’s where you will also discover your fortunes.

Are you a Master or Slave?

The mind is a wonderful servant but a terrible master.

If you have become a negative thinker, it is only because you have not cared to train your mind. You have not taken out the time or developed the discipline to make it your friend.

Training the mind is necessary to enable it to focus on the positive and to have clarity. Training the mind is necessary for happiness, and success.

Remember, we become what we think about all day long. So if you have not trained your mind to think the right thoughts, you have not really valued your happiness, success or life.

There is nothing more important than your own happiness and fulfilment and this can come only to a mind that has been trained.

So make the best investment with the highest return – train your mind through the practice of meditation.

Only you are responsible !

You are responsible

One of the greatest truths you can accept is that you are responsible for whatsoever you are.

If you are miserable, you are responsible for it. And if you are happy, you are responsible for it too. Don’t throw the responsibility on others, otherwise you will never be free.

How can you ever be free if others are in charge of creating your unhappiness, misery or suffering? If this is the case, then unless they decide to free you, you will never be free. It is in their hands to make you happy or not. You are in a jail and they are the jailers. Their will is what works, yours doesn't.

But if you are the creator of your own happiness and unhappiness, then it is all in your hands. You can choose to feel one way or another, be one way or another. Only when you accept that you create everything for yourself, can you choose to create something new. Till the time you accept this truth, you will always remain a victim without power.

You have to accept the fact that you alone are responsible for everything that is happening to you, has happened to you, will happen to you. No matter how hard and painful it is.

Once you accept the responsibility of being a creator in totality, you grow up.
Now you need nothing else to save you. You can save yourself.

Authenticity is the mark of the Master

2500 years ago, the Awakened one said…”One is not versed in Truth because one speaks much of it. One who, after hearing a little Truth, realises it directly and is constantly aware of it, is truly versed in the Truth”

In the spiritual supermarket out there, there are hundreds out there claiming to be awakened masters and teachers. Many are genuine but those who aren’t will make you suffer even more.

The genuine ones will free you and the ones who are here to misguide you will bind you even more in the chains of fear and ignorance.

The genuine ones will show you the power you have and make you responsible for your own reality; the pretenders will tell you that you are just a victim, a twig in the river of life.

The awakened ones will speak little but the truth and will bring the taste of reality to you; the others will lull you into deeper sleep and sing you a melodious lullaby in the process.

Just because people speak of the truth frequently and eloquently does not mean they are living in it. Beautiful words and eloquent speech is cheap and irrelevant.

Know a master not merely by the words you hear but by the quality of their awareness of the Truth!

Victim-itis

The worst disease of all is Victim-itis

I have been away from this blog, travelling and wandering Singapore and the world. In all my wanderings I meet people of all kinds – those who have a lot and those who have little; those who are very happy and those that are miserable.

It’s amazing to see how many of us think of ourselves as victims. We complain about our circumstances and what others did to us. We complain about what we have or what we do not have. We complain about the past and even about the future.

It’s important to understand that whatever psychological comfort there is in feeling powerless and blameless in any circumstances, in the end, victims lead unsatisfied lives.

The worst dis-ease of all is feeling like a victim. Thinking as if you have no power to create, no choice in the matter. Victim-itis covers your original nature (that of a powerful creator) under a thick layer of blame, complain, self-pity and misplaced righteousness. It leaves you powerless.

We're most vulnerable to victimitis when we're under the influence of powerful emotions like fear, insecurity, anger, frustration, grief, or depression. Yet it's during times of emotional tumult that using our power to choose our thoughts and attitudes is most important. Sometimes, we can't make pain go away, but we can refuse to suffer.

Reality begins with a thought.
Even when we don't like any of our choices, we do have some -- once we realize this, we can begin to take control, to reclaim our original nature. It isn't easy, but what we do and how we choose to feel about ourselves has a profound impact on the quality of our lives.

The world owes you nothing! Accept this fact! You are here to create whatever you want, by your own choices and actions, and you should do so joyfully.
Reality begins with a thought. Whether you are a victim or a creator also begins with a thought. As you think, so you become!

Watch your thoughts; they lead to attitudes.Watch your attitudes; they lead to actions.Watch your actions; they lead to habits.Watch your habits; they form your character.Watch your character; it determines your destiny.

These words of unknown origin tell us that our silent and often subconscious thoughts and choices shape our future.

Every aspect of our lives, at home and at work, can be improved if we use our power to think, reflect, and make conscious choices about our thoughts, attitudes, words, actions, and habits.
We never can control what others think, say and do, but we do have power over what we think, feel, say and do. Unless of course we think we don’t. As we think, so is our reality.
Taking personal responsibility for our happiness and success can be scary, but the payoff is enormous.

Wake up now – there are no victims! Don’t make your self one.

Living in the Truth

Truth is not simply a set of doctrines or dogma.

Truth is an attitude of gratitude and love. It flows from your heart, it can not be fully grasped by your head. An intellectual understanding of the truth is at the best, limited, and at the worst, severely deceived.

Truth is more a presence than a belief. Freedom is more a feeling than an action.

BUT, it is through our beliefs and actions that we experience truth and freedom.

If you do not have an experiential knowledge of truth and freedom then work on changing your beliefs and actions and see what kind of results new beliefs and actions create.

Remember the key to being free is the revelation that you already are.

You are free to choose your thoughts, words and actions and that creates your life.

Truth and freedom are the natural state of your heart.
It is your responsibility to teach your head to get in alignment with the power and authority that is in your heart, which is connected to your Soul.

On a deeper level of your being you are totally free and on another level you are learning to walk in freedom.

Listen to the Wisdom that is within you and create a great day today!
You are after all a Creator, and have always been so.

Every Thought is a Seed

The truth is that your thoughts are just like seeds!

Every thought you have is a seed you plant in the eco-system of your life experience!
And seeds are known to grow into trees that bear fruit.

What kind of seeds have you been planting?
Your mind is like the rich, fertile soil of a garden. Whatever type of seed or thought you plant in it will grow into a tree that bears fruit.

Your fruit is known by your results. Look at the results are you getting in your life? They reveal the type of seeds that you have planted throughout your past.

When you were young you did not have the choice of what kind of seeds got planted in your mind but now that you are older you get to choose the thoughts that you hold in your mind.

Whatever you hold in your mind on a consistent basis does in fact become your reality.

So train your mind to think thoughts of peace and joy. Of happiness and success.
Make sure you spend a lot more time thinking about what you do want instead of what you don't want.

As you think, so you are.

This is a deeper truth than most people realize. Your thoughts, feelings and actions are your responsibility. Choose them wisely and you will create a life of your choosing. Ignore them and you will have a life you don’t want.

You are a Creator; you cannot change this reality!
So choose to be a conscious creator rather than an unconscious one.

Enlightenment Mantras # 4

People are always in the search for answers... I say that the questions are what lead to Enlightenment.

Finding the answer can become an endless search, but asking the right question can become the beginning of the end of the beginning.

The Buddha asked himself a question 2568 years ago, had the courage to follow where it led him, and eventually woke up.
I asked myself a question 24 years ago and had the courage to follow where it led me, and here 'I AM'.

The question is always more important than the answer.

I will be happier if you have the question rather than if you seek the answer alone, because asking the right question will always lead to the answer.

Let me start you on your way. Here is the question for you.....

If God were to grant you one favour, what would you ask for?

Carry this question with you in your awareness and have the courage to go where it takes you.

Soon I will welcome you to your own awakening...

Enlightenment Mantras # 3

Here is a sure way to fail.....
Try to please everybody!

To be successful in anything, you must make your decisions and let the chips fall where they will. You cannot please everyone and if you try to then you are doomed to failure.

When we share the things that have meaning and value to us, there will always be people who disagree BUT on the other hand there will always be people who are encouraged by our message and thankful for it.

If you go through life trying to please everyone, the chances are you will be confused and stressed a great deal of the time. Your message is not for everyone but it is just right for some.

I do not try to please everyone because I know that's impossible.

Have you ever had someone try to tell you what to do and impose their ideas and agendas on you? Of course you have, we all have.
So what's the main point for you to learn from my experience with the nay sayers?
Simply this... Don't listen to them!

Whatever you have been called to do, keep doing it. Stay the course.

Realize that rejection is part of the price you must pay to succeed.

DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAY SAYERS. It is one of the sure ways to fail.

One question to change your Life forever!

The Enlightened Masters say that there are just 2 motivating forces for everything that we think or do in life; Love or Fear.

These forces are at work all the time, in every moment, and you can be motivated by only one of them at a time. They cannot exist together.

When you choose Love, it will bring belief, confidence, faith and expansion.
When you are motivated by Fear, it brings doubt, uncertainty, insecurity and contraction.

Love makes you progress; Fear makes you regress.

Love makes you bigger; Fear makes you smaller.

So to change your life forever, the next time you have to make any decision or choice, ask yourself this question -

"What would I do in this moment if I was not afraid? "

Have the courage to actually take action based on the answer, regardless of the consequences, and I can guarantee you that you will forever change from that moment on.

Love is always the right choice; Fear always the wrong one!

By choosing Love, and the answer it gives you, you will expand.
You will grow bigger, higher, stronger.
Guaranteed!

Enlightenment Mantras # 2

As I said in my post earlier, the Enlightenment Mantras that I share with you here are meant to make you transcend your normal way of thinking.

If you look at the definition of the word "normal" you will find that it means 'to be like everyone else, to be one of the masses, to think and act in an accepted way'. In other words to be normal is to be conditioned.

The Enlightenment Mantras that I share with you here are meant to de-condition you; to break down your normal way of thinking. They are meant to de-construct your present mind set. They are meant to make you from 'normal' to 'abnormal'.
Once this is achieved, your perception of life will change and so will your experience of life, because experience always follows perception.

Spiritually maturity is achieved easiest not by adding more and more new constructs and information to your mind, but by a breaking down of everything that is non essential to the manifestation of your happiness and freedom. And this is exactly what these Enlightenment Mantras are created to do.

So here is your Enlightenment Mantra for today.....

EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU TODAY IS YOUR TEACHER!

In every moment of your life today, unknown and unplanned things will happen to you, some which you will like and some which you will hate. Some people today will make you happy and some will disturb you to no end.
However, no matter what happens, remember that is it your teacher. Be open to it, learn the lesson it provides, and move one step ahead.

EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU TODAY IS YOUR TEACHER!

Non-Resistance is the way of the Enlightened

Namaste.
Can u kindly elaborate on the 'non-resistance' disposition? Suppose something u dislike or untoward happens, do u accept it? I'd like to know how to deal with the 'thou shall not' principles that guide our existence.
Shalom
Gladys

Namaste Gladys,

The teaching is the following...
Existence is far bigger than you or me. No-one of us is the whole of Life itself but have individual lives within this Whole. Living in our ego-identity, we think that our life is the whole, and thus want Existence to fall in line with our desires and wishes in every moment, and when it doesn't we resist the moment and what-is.

It is a fact of life that literally everything in existence is beyond our control. In fact if you look deeply enough you find that the maximum you can control, and this too only happens with a lot of training, is your own action, your own feelings and your own thoughts.
Beyond this, no-thing and no-one is in your control.

Thus, since existence is largely made up of what you cannot control, it is obvious that things that you want will happen sometimes, as well as things you do not want at other times.

Resistance to anything will only provide more fuel for your ego, and feed the thing you resist itself, as you try to manipulate and maneuver things to fall in line with your desires.
Resistance to what-is will create more suffering and pain, for you and for others around you.

I still remember the day my Master asked me "What makes you think you are here to make everything go your way?"
It was a revelation for me and stunned me into silence and freedom.

All along I had been living life thinking that things should always go my way!
If you look deeply you ll realise that the whole world lives thinking the same thing, and because we always resist what-is, and want things to be just the way we want them to be, we always create pain, and suffer.

Non-resistance means that you simply open yourself fully to life, and accept whatever the moment brings. accept whatever arises, in you or in another around you, and then from a point of acceptance of the moment, you observe your options, choose the option that best leads to overall harmony, and take action on it.

You are still making choices, only from a state of non resistance to Existence and what it brings to you in the moment. You are responding to Existence rather than reacting to it, and in this crucial difference is the secret to happiness, joy, manifestation and enlightenment.

This is the way of the Masters.

Remember the 3 crucial words...
1. Accept (Non-Resistance)
2. Observe (Choice)
3. Respond (Action)
This is the teaching of the Enlightened Masters.

THE MASTER RESISTS NOTHING ! S/HE RESPONDS TO EVERYTHING !

May I suggest you read my book The Little Manual of Enlightenment (available everywhere) and also Enlightenment Made Simple (if you can get your hands on this one as its out of print) as in both of them I have written more about the subject of Non-Resistence. Thank you Gladys.

With love and light, I wish you enlightenment.

Enlightenment Mantras

Enlightenment Mantras

From today onwards I have decided to share with you powerful and very practical Mantras, which will guide you towards your own Enlightenment.

Remember that Mantras are tools that help you to transcend the way that your mind has been working for the past many lifetimes. So the tools that I will present you with will allow you to see the world with completely new eyes and to create a completely new reality for yourself.

All you have to do is to plant the Mantra that I share with you into the soil of your mind, and allow it to stay there. It will grow on its own and bring about changes from the inside out.

So here is your Enlightenment Mantra for today:

FIGHT WITH NOTHING IN LIFE. USE EVERYTHING TO MOVE ONE STEP AHEAD!

When you fight something, you have actually halted the flow of your life energy to change something or to resist it; you have taken a pause. Instead fight with nothing; see what the moment offers you, accept it, observe your options and use the best option to move one step ahead in your own life journey.

Allow nothing to obstruct you, instead use everything to increase your flow!

The Real Secret

The Real Secret

You are already free.
You are always a creator.

How?

In every moment, you are free to choose your thoughts, you are free to choose your words, and you are free to choose your actions.
These 3 things create your life.

What do you think free-will is? It is the freedom of choice; the ability to choose to think and do as you wish.

So what are you choosing to think about, talk about and take action on, in this moment?
This is how you exercise your free-will in every moment. This is how you create your reality in every moment, whether you realize it or not.

Thus the most important question in your life is - "What are you thinking now? "
In this simple action lies the seed of your reality.

This simple action also is the most powerful action that's is possible for you.

So what are you thinking NOW?

When you think, consciously or un-consciously, you choose! And when you choose, you create.
This is the only way it is.
And that's the real Secret!

Choose your thought in every moment and you are a Master of your life.

What are you choosing NOW?
What are you creating NOW?

With love and light to you,

The most important attribute of life

The world today is one that constantly pulls your attention, energy and focus outwards. When we live life this way, we tend to get lost in the external world, and soon forget the importance of our inner world. We lose touch with who we are. We forget what we have come here to be, or to do.

When our entire life, and identity, is based on the externals of life, we begin to run a mad race to acquire more and more, create more and more, and to find our meaning in the external world of our own creations.

Living life this way takes you further and further away from your inner core, and soon you will find yourself stressed out, feeling empty and questioning the purpose of your life. If you live life based on the externals, there is no way out of this predicament.

This is also the malady of the world today. All of us suffer from it to different degrees.

The solution to this dis-ease can be found in the wisdom of the ancient spiritual masters. They advise us that since each one of us is unique and special, all of us has our own individual purpose of life. They call this purpose DHARMA.

To find this Dharma they say we must look deeply within ourselves to find our deepest driving desire. What is the thing we want to do most? What actions bring us the greatest joy and fulfillment? What do we like to spend our time doing?

Finding the answer to these questions will lead us to our Dharma, our true purpose of life. And living a life of productive and positive action in line with our Dharma will bring us the greatest sense of completion and joy. When our actions are effective and passionate, in line with our Dharma, we will also become excellent at what we do, and therefore we will create material wealth for ourselves and others.

The greatest and most important attribute of life therefore is AUTHENTICITY. Being true to your Self.

It is only when we stop looking at our meaning or identity from the eyes of others, or based on external possessions, and turn our vision inwards to our heart-space, that we become aware of who we really are. From there we will become clear on what we wish to become.

Being authentic is therefore the first step in your journey of wholeness.
Being true to yourself as you are now, is the first step in your journey of what you can become.

The Enlightenment Specialist

From fire to fire

In my search for truth, i learnt from masters, both contemporary and traditional, the ancient wisdom secrets of the universe. One of these laws is that we must get before we can give, and we must give once we have recieved. Also, the more we give, the more we continue to recieve.

In my journey to truth, i recieved a lot from my teachers and masters, and it is now my endeavor to give the same wisdom to those who are ready to recieve it.

I cannot give you your truth, but i can show you the path to finding your own truth.

This is the greatest treasure i can offer you.
